How do you discipline a 5 year old who has ADHD or Aspergers?

September 5th, 2008
grrrlwiz asked:

My five year old is currently on a waiting list for an Aspergers evaluation or the doctor said it may also be ADHD because a lot of the symptoms overlap. I don’t know how to discipline him. Nothing seems to work very well. I don’t want to hold him to too high of expectations if he is physically unable to comply but of course I don’t want to let him get away with stuff that he should be able to do. It seems like he absolutely cannot sit still and quiet in church for an hour like other children his age or even younger. He is very disrespectful. He constantly says things are stupid and flops around and won’t look at me when I am trying to talk to him. He got kicked out of McDonalds for grabbing kids and saying mean things. I hate just up and leaving places when he misbehaves because it is not fair to his brother and sister to have to constantly leave places because he is naughty. We are using time-outs mostly and trying to accentuate the positives but he is always in time out!

How do you know if your child has ADHD?

September 3rd, 2008
Blueeyedgirly asked:

My son is 4 and he I don’t know if he is hyperactive or has ADHD? He runs constantly and cannot sit still, even having problems with this in school. His speech is behind due to not listening. He has a hard time napping and sleeping a full amount of time. Believe me I am not trying to “label” my son and am very anti-med at his age but if he needs treatment to learn I will take him in. Anyone have a child diagnosed with it and how do they act?

What is the best medication and / or alternative treatment for ADHD in a 6yo?

September 2nd, 2008
tripeace asked:

My son was diagnosed with ADHD today, finally. What is the best medication for this? I was looking at Vyvanse which has mild side effects and has been highly rated for it’s effectiveness. Has anyone tried Vyvanse for their child?

Also, if you know of any alternative treatments or methods that work well along with medication, I am interested in these too.

Cynthia

How can I stay patient with my ADHD child?

September 1st, 2008
Happy Holly Days asked:

She is 10, I expect her to misbehave sometimes, but with ADHD, she can’t follow directions. I get stressed and yell because I expect her to listen when I am asking her to do one simple thing, but she is in lala land. I really don’t want to medicate, but I feel bad for yelling at her to pay attention. I don’t have time to read ADHD books, I have classes and work. Is there an ADHD for dummies book?
Finally got this stupid add details thing to work-

Thanks to you experienced people, I don’t like meds, she isn’t that bad really. I did read but I can’t read it all, ya know. Shrinks are no smarter than me, so forget that. I think I’ll just keep yellin at her till she stops.

Thanks!

Angel

What are some things that I can do to deal with ADHD during the summer?

August 19th, 2008
***HDK*** asked:

I just found out at the end of last school (university) year that I have ADHD. I’m not taking classes now and am working on my parents farm for the summer. I am especially concerned with my social troubles, but do not have any access to social situations here (REALLY small town and all the people my age are gone for summer — plus I’ve never really had any friends to start with). What are some things that I can do now to make next year better?

Has anyone found a way of really controlling their childs ADHD?

August 18th, 2008
grdnangel0209 asked:

My 11 yr old boy has ADHD. He’s not meds cause when he was on Adderall he quit eating and lost almost 15 pounds and got really lethargic. But now he’s back to not concentrating, talking in school, and refuses to listen to his teachers. He’s got a major self esteem problem too but don’t know if it plays into his adhd or not. Just fustrating to try to help him and he doesn’t seem to listen or if he does he gets mad and starts calling himself stupid, dumb. Don’t know what to do! Any suggestions? Thanks.
