Meds For Adhd -Points Not Often Mentioned In The Doctor’S Office

February 13th, 2010
Robert William Locke asked:

When a doctor prescribes meds for ADHD, he or she often forgets to tell the parents a few home truths which could make life easier for everybody. Maybe the doctor is pressed for time, maybe he does not know that much about ADHD meds for kids and their side effects. The main thing she should be telling you is that meds for ADHD are only a means for controlling the symptoms. They do not cure the condition and they certainly do NOT train the child in life skills! There is no way that he is going to mention seeking an alternative ADHD therapy which has NO side effects and will do the job just as well. We all have to look after our jobs and the doctor is no exception.

This is where parenting and school will play such a major role in any treatment program for ADHD.

First thing to do is to talk to your child and explain that ADHD is just another way of saying that he can do some things really well but has problems in doing other things like homework, if he is suffering from ADHD inattentive type. You need to stress that ADHD children grow up to be successful and famous and mention such personalities like Michael Phelps, Einstein and Ty Pennington, just to name a few. It needs working on so they have to make an effort too and ADHD is not an excuse for bad behaviour. You can also explain that the meds for ADHD are not a magic pill. They are there just to give them a helping hand.

Making sure that the school set up is not going to disadvantage your child is the next step. That means talking to the teacher and find out what is going on in the classroom, where your child spends a large part of their lives. The Center for ADD/ADHD Advocacy Canada has made a few suggestions which may help. These are directed at teachers but the parent can find out what they are, and what special facilities are available. The above mentioned body mentions giving reduced homework and more time for tests and sometimes, where justified, of giving the test in an alternative format. These can sometimes help in making school tasks less challenging for an ADHD child. The school will also want to find out which meds for ADHD are being given to your child. You can choose whether or not to answer that question because you know as an informed parent that while ADHD meds for kids are sometimes effective, their side effects far outweigh their advantages

Most ADHD experts are now agreed that children do not have enough contact with nature which can exacerbate ADHD symptoms so making sure your child gets ‘green time’ is a great healthy way of releasing energy to reduce hyperactivity. A University of Illinois study showed very clearly that children after some ‘green time’ were less inattentive and able to focus better. Diet too is rarely mentioned in the doctor’s office but a simple step like drastically reducing carbohydrates and favouring proteins at breakfast can be a great help. Find out what else what was not mentioned in the doctor’s office about ADHD meds for kids by clicking on the link below.

Help With Adhd Children - Stories From the Adhd Drugs World

February 10th, 2010
Robert William Locke asked:

Is this the sort of help with ADHD children you, as a parent, are looking for? At the James Madison University, students were interviewed about their misuse of the ADHD drugs like Adderall to help them study for exams. Overall anything between 5 % and 35% of students are snorting this drug or similar ones to get through their exams. They seem to be ignorant of other possible side effects such as: anxiety, hypertension, hallucinations, insomnia, weight loss, sudden death and seizures. They seem to be unaware that Adderall is a Schedule II drug and they could get up to 40 years of imprisonment under Virginia drug law. Fines of up to $500,000 could be imposed as well. Is this the treatment of ADHD in children you wanted?

Is this the future you see for your child when s/he gets to university? Here is another story of a boy in the UK who had severe ADHD and was on a very high dose (70 mg) of Concerta. Normally a 50mg dose is the maximum dose. Because of the side effects of this ADHD drug supposed to calm hyperactivity and control impulsivity, this boy injured himself while trying to iron a shirt which he was wearing at the time. One of the side effects of the drug was a terrible feeling of depression and listlessness. The 18 year old stopped taking the medication and one of his reactions was to go and burn down a school. He was convicted of arson and ordered to pay damages. Is this the sort of treatment of ADHD in children you were looking for?

When parents ask about treatment of ADHD in children, they do not want to hear these stories and many will shrug their shoulders saying that these are calculated risks. Other parents will run a mile from these ADHD medications which are a cocktail of amphetamines and they know that they are addictive and can lead to drug abuse. They also know that these psychostimulants are in great demand on the school parking lot. Up to 20% of teenagers who have been on these ADHD drugs are at risk of drug dependency and ending up on the drugs scene and even as pushers. Is this the only help with ADHD children we are offered by the drugs industry?

Many parents have read extensively on ADHD and know that , in spite of the drugs industry’s best efforts, there ARE alternative ADHD therapies available and they consist of herbal/homeopathic remedies which are just as effective and without any of the side effects or problems I have mentioned above. Each parent has to make an informed choice and the one thing that will influence them is the fact that ADHD drugs only suppress the symptoms and never cure the cause. Actually there is no cure but the natural remedies for ADHD will alleviate the symptoms and will not turn your child into a zombie , arsonist or drug pusher. This is the treatment of ADHD in children which will never get much publicity. The link here will give you all the information you need.

Popularity of Adhd Natural Supplements Grows!

January 18th, 2010
Diana Ketchen asked:

Parents who have ADHD children are well aware that many physicians choose prescription drugs as the first line of treatment instead of choosing a natural treatment of ADHD in children. Not only does this not address the root cause of the problem, many of these drugs worsen the symptoms or create harmful side effects. This is why more people are opting to use ADHD natural supplements to effectively reduce symptoms that their children may be experiencing.

Holistic medical practitioners and many leading pediatric specialists are beginning to use organic ADHD natural supplements to treat ADHD symptoms. It is the decreased amounts of substances like fatty acids, dopamine, and norepinephrine that are responsible for the lack of focus and learning difficulties of many children. ADHD natural supplements can replenish and balance both neurotransmitters and fatty acids. With this type of natural treatment of ADHD, there are no safety and health issues.

ADHD natural supplements are available in many forms that can relieve the symptoms of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders. What these quality supplements do is safely increase levels for key neurotransmitters in the brain and produce a natural treatment of ADHD in children.

When there is a shortage of critically important factors like omega 3 fatty acids, dopamine, or norepinephrine, it results in focusing and attention difficulty. ADHD natural supplements are able to provide effective relief of many of these symptoms. Natural treatment of ADHD in children will not cause any of the side effects frequently seen with the use of prescription medications.

According to researchers, there are many nutrients and supplements that can be used as a natural treatment of ADHD in children. These products are shown to improve learning and neurological processing in individuals. Some of these ADHD natural supplements and nutrients are also capable of balancing the blood sugar levels, which will also help control hyperactivity, and behavioral problems that are seen in many children diagnosed with learning difficulties.

For proper brain activity, it is necessary to have adequate amounts of dopamine. Two specific amino acids, tyrosine and phenylalanine, are needed in order for the brain to produce the dopamine it requires. Some children do not have adequate levels of these critical amino acids and in most cases, it is the diet that is to blame. This is why ADHD natural supplements are so crucial for parents to use products that provide a natural treatment of ADHD in children.

Research has long shown that Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are also necessary for human growth and proper neurological development. One EFA that has proven successful in many tests is Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This substance enables the brain to transmit impulses properly and is a wonderful, natural treatment of ADHD in children.

DHA is a polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid created from alpha-linolenic acid or derived naturally from fish oils. There are many studies involving the relationship between DHA levels and children with learning and behavioral difficulties. Purdue University was one of the research teams with results showing the DHA blood levels were significantly lower in boys with attention/behavioral problems.

Ginkgo biloba is another one of many ADHD natural supplements that has been used for improving the memory in individuals. Ginkgo can be very helpful in the natural treatment of ADHD because it enhances the flow of oxygen and blood to the brain and supports transmission of nerve impulses. This is why it is one of the ADHD supplements shown to have positive results in studies involving children.

Another natural treatment of ADHD in children involves GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and L-theanine. These are two important, naturally occurring substances that are now used as ADHD supplements. These ingredients are able to calm a hyperactive neurologic system and decrease the anxiety and nervous behaviors that are so often seen in many forms of ADHD.

Whichever adhd natural supplements you use, most are just as effective as prescription medicines but without all the side effects. Get informed and make a wise decision.

The Difference Between Herbal and Conventional Adhd Medicine

January 16th, 2010
Diana Ketchen asked:

ADHD is defined as a neurobiological disorder characterized by age-inappropriate features of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Research has shown that the disability tends to affect more boys than girls. ADHD is assumed to be caused by genetic factors but there is no empirical evidence to date that would point to the real cause of this condition. What is apparent though is that cases of ADHD have continued to rise by 3% to 5% in school-age children. As parents and teachers struggle to deal with this phenomenon, different methods are being tested and implemented. One approach deals with the use of ADHD medicine to help manage if not to treat the disorder.

An ADHD medicine come in two forms. One is the traditional medicine that is prescribed by doctors and the other is alternative or herbal medicine. A synthetic stimulant is a well-known medicine for ADHD. They work to promote more activity for the chemicals in the brain that is believed to be responsible for causing ADHD symptoms. The first-line stimulants in the market today are composed mainly of methylphenidate like Ritalin, Concerta, and Metadate.

However, some studies have found stimulants to be ineffective for patients with ADHD. That is why an ADHD medicine that is a non-stimululant has been developed. Strattera is a brand of non-stimulant medication that is said to have longer effects on the patient’s attention span. Still, like any other conventional medicine, stimulants, and non-stimulants for ADHD are believed to have serious side effects. It may include migraine, loss of appetite, and depression. It is in this regard that the attention to herbal ADHD medicine has been focused.

The use of herbs and other elements from nature is an ancient therapeutic practice. A number of herbal medicine for ADHD have been applied. One popular natural medicine that has been found to be effective is Pycnogenol present in pine bark and grape seed. Another alternative medicine is called evening primrose oil, which is said to be high in Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. It works under the contention that in order for the brain to work well, a balance has to be achieved between saturated fats (from animal products we eat) and unsaturated fats.

Herbal practice for management of ADHD also involves the use of everyday activities that help reduce the symptoms. This includes a nutritional diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and positive socialization. For persons with ADHD eating more of the fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is preferred over food containing additives and sugar. Meanwhile, daily exercise is not only good for the body but also conditions the brain and its mechanisms. This should be supplemented by adequate sleep that keeps the mind alive and fully functioning. Finally, connecting with family, friends and loved ones bring emotional attachments that benefit the whole body.

A herbal ADHD medicine is all natural since they it’s made primarily from nature’s natural ingredients. There have been a lot of studies made on their safety as an alternative medicine for ADHD. Additionally, they have less side effects and are just as effective as the conventional medicines available in the market.

Parenting A Child With Adhd - Three Points For Parents

January 13th, 2010
Robert William Locke asked:

Do you know what an ‘alphabet kid’ is? Well, they are becoming fashionable as children are diagnosed with more and more disorders, such as ADHD, ODD, SD, ASD so hence the term ‘alphabet kid’. ODD stands for Oppositional Defiant disorder, SD for Sleeping Disorder while ASD stands for Autistic Spectrum Disorder. These are the so-called co-morbid disorders so parents end up being confused as they face a task of parenting a child with ADHD and maybe a few other disorders thrown in. Up to some time ago it was thought that Asperger’s and ADHD would very rarely overlap. The Journal of Autism and Developmental disorders has found that about 50% of autistic children show symptoms of hyperactivity.

Here are three points to help with ADHD and parenting :-

1. Getting ADHD diagnosed is the first hurdle in parenting a child with ADHD. Make sure that it is diagnosed by a specialist and that means a pediatrician with ADHD experience or a clinical psychologist. Most doctors are not specialized in ADHD so most overdiagnosis occurs here. The psychologist is much more likely to give an accurate diagnosis. Consultations with a psychologist can be quite expensive so a much cheaper option is to seek out a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). The difference is that these counsellors are at a Master’s level while the clinical psychologists usually has a doctorate in his specialisation.

2. An expert at the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University in the UK is convinced that most of children’s sleeping problems are due to overexposure to electronic media before bedtime whether they have ADHD or not. With an array of electronic devices in the bedroom such as mobile phones, computers and TVs, it has been shown that the bright screens keep children alert (the bright light tricks the brain into thinking it is daytime). Children who do not get enough sleep get into a hyperactive state the next day and also have learning difficulties. Also, up to 20% of children who have ADHD are going to have problems with insomnia. Whatever the reason for the sleep problems, parents will do well to establish a bedtime routine and reduce exposure media long before it is time for bed. This is another thing to bear in mind when parenting a child with ADHD.

3. A recent book published , called ‘The Metabolic Effects of Psychotropic Drugs’ points the finger at these ADHD drugs which are basically psychostimulants but their side effects can be long lasting and troublesome, eg. they can cause weight gain and diabetes (Type 2). Antidepressants prescribed for children can be equally damaging. The third thing to bear in mind when parenting a child with ADHD is the need to assess carefully all the risks of ADHD medication and parents should consider alternatives.

ADHD and parenting will be a challenge. One alternative is to consider carefully an ADHD homeopathic remedy which will reduce symptoms of ADHD, has no side effects and is safe for children. The link below will answer any doubts you may have.

I have adhd and my mom wont let me get adderall. What are your opinions on caffeine pills?

January 8th, 2010
rastasojah asked:

I zone out in school so bad. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m brilliant, ADHD is just detrimental. My mom is afraid im going to abuse/sell amphetamines if they are prescribed to me. Caffeine is the only thing I’ve found to help me so far. Would it be safe to use moderate doses of caffeine to maintain focus at school?
