limbic ADHD - Another Type Of ADHD ?
June 11th, 2010 | by admin |Robert William Locke asked:
First there were three, then there were six! No, it is not a miracle, fable or children’s riddle! According to the ADD/ADHD expert, Dr. Amen, there are six types of ADHD. I thought there were only three!
It is the fifth type, limbic ADHD, according to his analysis, which interests me for the purposes of this article.
Dr Amen believes that brain scans or neuro-imaging should be carried out on as many ADHD children as possible. He has identified different parts of the brain which are active and/or inactive which produce behaviour disorders. If you study his work, you can see that the brain scans for the six types of ADHD are quite distinct. Limbic ADHD is no exception. Children who have limbic ADHD show that the limbic areas (the thalamus and the hypothalamus) are working overtime even when at rest, while other areas are practically inactive. Because of the over activity in the first two areas, there is a prevalence of negativity, low esteem, sad thoughts, moodiness and a general sense of apathy. In other words, it is a type of ADHD complicated by the presence of some of the symptoms of depression which makes it difficult to treat.
Limbic ADHD Treatment
Most children with limbic ADHD get even worse if they are put on psychostimulants and become rather weepy. Sometimes they are prescribed anti-depressants such as Welbutrin but there are side effects of anti-depressants which are troublesome.
Some recommend the Chinese herb which is called. Huperzine A- for limbic ADHD treatment. Studies are being done at Harvard University on this herb as it could have implications for various other mental disorders such as Alzheimers. You have to be very careful with the dosage as too much will drive the patient into a deep depression.
Most experts now agree that whatever the type of ADHD, medications alone just will not be enough. Behavioral interventions such as learning how to deal with behaviour and respond appropriately to misbehaviour is most important. Nutrition, exercise, parental and educational support all play key roles. I think that the best areas to concentrate are a natural cure for ADHD such as homeopathy which will be just as effective in calming symptoms, improving mood which is crucial for limbic ADHD, and has no side effects. Learning about ADHD behaviour therapy can be a great source of help and comfort to parents too.
